Refreshing thirty-four pages beat writing twelve new ones
A B2B site was publishing four articles a month with flat organic growth. The assumption was that output needed to increase. The audit found the opposite.
Background
Twelve months of steady publishing had produced a larger site that was not a stronger one. The team was doing everything the standard advice recommends, at a consistent pace, with reasonable quality.
The plan for the following quarter was twelve more articles. Before commissioning them, they wanted to understand why the previous year had produced so little movement.
The answer was uncomfortable: publishing more had been actively making the problem worse.
The challenge
Three issues compounded each other, and none of them would have been solved by additional output.
- Decay nobody was tracking
Thirty-four pages with genuine accumulated authority had slid in position over two years, simply because competitors updated theirs and these had not. Ranking is comparative.
- New pages competed with old
Recent articles overlapped existing ones closely enough that search engines had to choose between them, which reset accumulated performance each time.
- Nothing targeted the buying stage
Coverage was dense at the informational end and absent where purchase decisions happen, so traffic grew while inquiries stayed flat.
- No coverage map existed
Topics were chosen monthly by discussion rather than against a map of demand, so overlap was invisible until after publication.
- Success was measured in volume
Reporting counted pieces published and sessions gained, neither of which distinguishes a page that earns inquiries from one that does not.
The strategy
The recommendation was to spend the same budget differently: fix what already existed before adding anything, and add far less than planned.
- Audit existing content first
Every page scored for accumulated authority against current position, which identified where a refresh would return more than a new article ever could. Detailed in content strategy.
- Refresh the top thirty-four
Updated, restructured and re-linked rather than rewritten from scratch, so existing signals were preserved rather than discarded and rebuilt.
- Resolve the overlaps
Where two pages chased one query, one was designated the owner and the other consolidated or differentiated deliberately. Covered in on-page SEO.
Four buying-stage gaps had genuine demand and no page at all. Those were written. The other eight planned articles were canceled.
Cancelling them was the single most valuable recommendation in the engagement, and the hardest to make, because it meant arguing against work the client had already budgeted for.
The results
Queries with a single clear owning page rose from 58% to 91%, which is the figure that mattered most: the site stopped competing with itself.
Refreshed pages moved faster than new ones would have, because a page with two years of accumulated links and engagement history starts any competition well ahead of a fresh URL.
Four new pages did more than twelve would have, at a third of the cost. The eight canceled pieces would have added volume to areas already saturated.
Publishing more and moving less?
Send your URL and what you have published in the last year. You will get an honest read on whether your gap is coverage, decay or overlap.
Book a free consultation →What this does not prove
This site had two years of existing content with genuine accumulated authority to work with. A newer site with few pages has nothing to refresh and would legitimately need to publish. The right answer depends entirely on what already exists.
Client names, analytics screenshots and logos are withheld because this work was done under employment or confidentiality terms. If you want verification before engaging, I would rather arrange a reference conversation than publish material I am not entitled to share.
