AI search optimization · AEO and GEO

Get your business quoted in AI answers, not summarized around.

More and more searches now get answered before anyone clicks a website — by the AI summary at the top of Google, and by assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Those systems still read real web pages and name their sources. This work is about being one of the sources they name.

Problems this service solves

Four ways businesses are losing visibility to AI answers

This is a genuinely new problem and most SEO work still ignores it. The uncomfortable part is that you can be doing well in normal rankings and still be missing from the answers people now read first.

01

Your traffic fell but your rankings did not

You still rank where you always did, and visits are down. Google is now answering the question at the top of the page, and your position no longer guarantees a visit.

Zero-click
02

A competitor is named and you are not

Ask ChatGPT for a recommendation in your industry and a competitor comes up. That is now a real referral channel, and it is being decided without you in the room.

Not cited
03

AI describes your business incorrectly

Assistants state outdated prices, wrong services, or a location you left years ago. They are assembling that from whatever they can find, and nobody has made the correct facts easy to find.

Wrong facts
04

Your pages cannot be quoted cleanly

Your answer exists, buried in the middle of a long page with no clear structure. AI systems lift self-contained answers. If yours cannot be extracted in one piece, it gets passed over.

Not extractable
Why this matters now rather than later
The click is disappearing before you see it

A search that used to send you a visitor now frequently ends at the summary. That loss appears in your analytics as declining traffic with no ranking change, which is easy to misdiagnose as something else entirely.

Being cited builds trust you cannot buy

When an AI assistant names your business as a source, that carries a weight advertising does not. It reads as a recommendation rather than a placement.

Early movers are being learned

These systems are forming their view of who the authorities are in each field right now. Businesses that make themselves easy to cite are being learned as reliable sources while the field is still open.

What AI search optimization involves

Six areas. Much of this strengthens your normal search performance too, which is why I would not treat it as a separate budget from the rest of your SEO.

06areas covered
on every engagement
01Measuring where you currently stand+
A baseline across AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini using the questions your customers genuinely ask. Without this you are working blind, and almost no business has this measurement in place today.
02Structuring answers so they can be quoted+
Each section answering its own heading directly, in the first sentence or two, in a way that makes sense lifted out of context. This is mostly restructuring what you already have rather than writing new material.
03Stating your facts in machine-readable form+
Structured data is code that tells machines plainly what your business is, what you offer, where you operate and what things cost. It removes the guesswork that produces wrong answers about you.
04Building presence where these systems look+
Assistants draw on more than your website: industry publications, comparison pages, review sites and forums. Being accurately represented in those places affects whether you get named.
05Making your expertise verifiable+
These systems weigh who is behind the content. Named authors with real credentials, clear about pages and consistent information across the web all make a source more likely to be trusted and cited.
06Tracking it over time+
Repeated testing of the same question set, so you can see whether citations are increasing and which changes moved them. Currently the only honest way to measure this.
How it runs

How an AEO and GEO project runs

01

Building the question set and baseline

I write out the questions your customers actually ask, then test them across the major AI tools and record who gets cited today. This is the reference point everything else is measured against.

A measured starting position
02

Fixing what your site declares

Structured data for your business, services, locations and prices, so machines read facts rather than inferring them. This is also where incorrect information about you gets corrected at the source.

Machine-readable facts
03

Restructuring your answers

Existing pages reworked so each section answers its heading directly and can stand alone. Little new writing, considerable difference in whether a passage can be quoted.

Quotable pages
04

Building presence and re-measuring

Working on the third-party sources these systems draw from, then repeating the baseline test to see what actually changed. Adjust and repeat.

Why choose me

Traditional SEO and AI search optimization overlap, but not completely

Most of good SEO helps you in AI answers too. But there are real differences, and the businesses getting cited are the ones treating those differences deliberately rather than assuming their existing work covers it.

What you receive

What you get from an AEO and GEO project

Main deliverable

A measured position, and pages built to be cited

The main outcome is knowing where you stand across AI tools, and having pages structured so those systems can quote you accurately rather than working around you.

  • A baseline showing who is cited today for the questions your customers ask
  • Structured data covering your business, services, locations and pricing
  • Existing pages restructured so answers can be extracted cleanly
  • A plan for the third-party sources these systems draw from
  • Repeat measurement so you can see what actually changed

A question set you keep

The real questions your customers ask, written out and reusable, so this can be re-tested every quarter without starting again.

A factual correction pass

Where AI tools state something wrong about your business, the specific sources causing it and what to change so the correct version wins.

Author and credibility setup

Named authors, credentials and consistent business information, which affects how much weight these systems give your pages.

Honest scope

A clear statement of what is measurable here and what is not, because a lot of what is currently sold as AI SEO is not measurable at all.

Case study

The answer was there, and it could not be lifted out

A business ranked in the top three for a question its customers asked constantly, and was never cited in the AI summary that appeared above those results. A competitor ranking lower was named every time.

Their answer existed, spread across four paragraphs and dependent on a section further up the page to make sense. The competitor answered the same question in two sentences directly under a matching heading. Restructuring the existing content so each section answered its own heading, without adding new material, changed whether it could be quoted.

Frequently asked questions

AI search questions, answered honestly

01What are AEO and GEO?+
AEO stands for answer engine optimization and GEO for generative engine optimization. Both describe the same practical goal: making your content the source that AI systems quote when they answer a question. AEO tends to refer to direct answers and featured snippets, GEO to AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity. In practice the work overlaps almost entirely.
02Is this different from normal SEO?+
It overlaps heavily. Clear structure, accurate information, genuine expertise and being referenced by other sites help in both. The differences are real but narrower than the marketing suggests: how answers are structured so they can be extracted, stating facts in machine-readable code, and measuring citations rather than only positions.
03Can you guarantee ChatGPT will recommend my business?+
No, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling something. These systems are not transparent, they change frequently, and nobody controls their output. What can be done is making your business easier to find, easier to quote and accurately represented — which improves the odds without guaranteeing anything.
04How do I know if AI search is costing me traffic?+
The clearest sign is traffic falling while rankings stay stable, particularly on questions with short factual answers. Search a few of your important terms and see whether an AI summary appears above the results and who it cites. That takes ten minutes and tells you more than most reports.
05Does structured data help with AI answers?+
It helps, though it is not the whole story. Structured data states your facts plainly in code rather than leaving machines to infer them from paragraphs, which reduces the chance of being described incorrectly. It also supports normal search results, so it is worth doing regardless of what happens with AI.
06Should I block AI systems from using my content?+
That is a genuine business decision and it cuts both ways. Blocking them protects your content from being summarized without a visit. It also removes you from a channel where being cited is becoming a real source of trust and referrals. For most service businesses I would lean toward being cited, but I would rather discuss it than assume.
07How do you measure AI visibility?+
By testing. There is no dashboard for this yet. I build a set of the questions your customers actually ask, run them across AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, and record who gets cited. Repeating that on a schedule shows the direction of travel, which is currently the most honest measurement available.
08How much does this cost?+
A baseline assessment with structured data and a restructuring plan typically runs from about $2,000 to $5,000 in the US. Ongoing work is usually folded into a wider SEO arrangement rather than sold separately, because most of it strengthens your normal search performance at the same time.
A deeper explanation

A closer look at AI search optimization

Something genuinely changed in search over the last two years, and it is worth being precise about what. AI systems did not replace web pages — they still read them, still rely on them, and still name their sources. What changed is that a growing share of searches now end at a summary rather than a click. The question shifted from “who ranks first” to “who gets quoted,” and those are related but not identical.

Why ranking first is no longer sufficient

You can hold position one and lose traffic. If Google answers the question in the box above your result, the person has what they needed and stops. This is most pronounced on questions with a short, factual answer — opening hours, definitions, quick comparisons. It is less pronounced where someone needs to choose a supplier, compare in detail or take an action. The practical implication is that content aimed at simple factual questions is worth less than it used to be, and content that helps someone make a decision is worth more.

What makes a passage quotable

Having looked at a lot of pages that do and do not get cited, the pattern is consistent and unglamorous. Cited passages answer their own heading directly, usually within the first sentence or two. They make sense read on their own, without depending on a paragraph further up. They are specific rather than hedged. They tend to be short. This is not a trick — it is simply clear writing, and it happens to also be what readers prefer. The most common failure I see is an answer that is genuinely there, buried three paragraphs into a section and dependent on context above it.

Being present where these systems look

Assistants do not only read your website. They draw on industry publications, comparison articles, review platforms, forums and directories. If a competitor is named when someone asks for a recommendation, it is usually because they appear across several of those places and you appear on your own site alone. That makes this work overlap considerably with link building and reputation, and it is why I would not treat AI visibility as a purely technical exercise.

The honest limits of this work

I want to be clear about what nobody can offer here. These systems are not transparent, their outputs vary between users and change without notice, and there is no dashboard reporting your citations. Anyone selling guaranteed inclusion in ChatGPT is guessing at best. What is genuinely achievable is making your business easier to find, easier to quote accurately and consistently represented across the sources these tools use — then measuring whether citations increase. That is a reasonable investment. Guaranteed placement is not a real product.

Where I would start

If your foundations are not right, start there instead, because AI systems have to reach and parse your pages like any other visitor — that is technical SEO. If your pages are sound, the highest-value work is usually restructuring existing content so answers can be extracted, and adding structured data so your facts are stated rather than inferred. Both are relatively quick, both help normal search as well, and both are things you own permanently. The slower work — building presence in the sources these systems draw on — follows the same logic as everything else in SEO, which is that being genuinely worth referencing is still the durable strategy. Related work on making individual pages clearer sits under on-page SEO.
