Quick answer: To get cited in Google AI Overviews, a page first has to be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet in regular search. Then make it easy to quote: answer specific questions directly near the top of each section, add original information competitors do not have, keep facts current, show clear authorship, and build consistent signals about who you are across the web. Google says there is no special markup or file required.

AI Overviews and AI Mode have changed what “ranking” means. A page can rank well and still be summarized without a click, while a page in position six gets cited as a source. Business owners keep asking me the same thing: how do we become the source? The useful news is that Google has now said plainly how its AI features select content, and most of it is good SEO done carefully.

What Google has said about optimizing for AI features

On May 15, 2026, Google Search Central published a guide called Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search. Its key points:

  • Google’s generative features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems. From Google’s perspective, optimizing for them is still SEO.
  • The features retrieve relevant indexed pages (often described as grounding) and build answers from them.
  • Valuable, unique, non-commodity content is emphasized.
  • Special AI-specific markup or files such as llms.txt are not required for Google’s AI features.

That guidance applies to Google. Other assistants, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, use their own retrieval systems and crawlers, but they reward many of the same qualities.

Step 1: Make sure the page is eligible

  • The page must be indexed. Check it with URL Inspection.
  • It must be eligible to show a snippet. A nosnippet directive, or data-nosnippet around key content, limits how that content can be used in AI features.
  • Important text must be present in the rendered HTML, not hidden behind tabs that only load on click.
  • For non-Google assistants, check that your robots.txt does not block their search crawlers if you want to be included.

Step 2: Answer specific questions directly

AI Mode in particular breaks a complex query into related sub-questions and searches for each one. Pages that answer one sub-question clearly are easier to use than pages that circle a topic. Practical habits: Couples choosing a venue ask about price, capacity and rain plans in one go, as I explain on my wedding venue SEO page.

  • Phrase H2 and H3 headings as the questions people ask.
  • Answer in the first one to three sentences under each heading, then add detail.
  • Make answers self-contained, so they make sense if quoted without the rest of the page.
  • Use lists for steps and tables for comparisons.
  • Define terms when you introduce them.

This works only when each page serves one clear search intent; pages trying to answer everything rarely get cited for anything. Local service businesses are a good example: for an appliance repair company, a single page explaining one brand’s drain error is far easier to quote than a general services page.

Step 3: Add information that only you can provide

Generative systems can summarize common knowledge from many sources. What they need from you is something they cannot get elsewhere: Clear ingredient lists and named medical oversight are that kind of detail for clinics on my IV therapy SEO page.

  • First-hand experience: what you saw, tested or fixed.
  • Original data: pricing ranges from your own quotes, survey results, benchmarks. A junk removal company that shows what a quarter, half and full truckload looks like on real jobs, as I describe on my junk removal SEO company page, is offering exactly that.
  • Specific processes, checklists and worked examples.
  • Clear opinions with reasons, where your expertise justifies them.

Step 4: Build entity clarity and trust

AI systems are more likely to rely on sources they can clearly identify and trust. That means: Mental health topics are held to an even higher standard, which I discuss on my therapist SEO page.

  • Visible authorship with real credentials and an author page.
  • Consistent business name, description and contact details across your site, profiles and directories.
  • Accurate Organization or Person structured data with sameAs links to your genuine profiles.
  • Mentions and links from reputable sites in your field.

Our guide to entity SEO explains how to build these signals step by step.

Step 5: Cover the topic, not just the keyword

Because AI answers draw on several related sub-questions, sites that cover a subject thoroughly have more chances to be retrieved. Organizing content into topic clusters gives you a clear page for each sub-question, linked together so systems and readers can follow the thread.

Step 6: Keep content current

Outdated facts are a reason not to cite a page. Review pages on fast-changing topics regularly, update statistics and examples, and show a genuine last-updated date. A scheduled content freshness process makes this routine rather than reactive. Health topics change too: hearing care pages written before over-the-counter hearing aids arrived in 2022 now need updating, a point I cover on my audiologist SEO page.

How to measure AI visibility

What to trackHow
Google AI features trafficSearch Console includes AI Overviews and AI Mode data within overall Search performance
Citations for priority queriesManual checks or AI visibility tracking tools for a fixed query set
Referrals from assistantsAnalytics referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot and similar
Brand demandBranded search impressions over time

Expect volatility. AI answers vary between sessions and users, so track trends across a stable set of queries rather than reacting to single checks.

Common myths

  • “You need llms.txt.” Not for Google’s AI features, according to Google’s guide.
  • “FAQ schema gets you into AI Overviews.” Structured data helps machines understand content, but Google has retired FAQ rich results and says no special markup is required for AI features.
  • “AI SEO replaces SEO.” For Google, they are the same foundations: crawlable, indexable, helpful, trustworthy pages.

If competitors are being cited while you are summarized around, the gap is usually in extractability, uniqueness or entity clarity. That diagnosis is the core of our AEO and GEO work.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to rank on page one to be cited in AI Overviews?

Not necessarily in the top three, but your page needs to be indexed and competitive for the query or its sub-questions. Pages cited in AI Overviews are typically pages that also perform reasonably in organic results.

Can I opt out of AI Overviews?

You can limit how your content is shown with nosnippet, data-nosnippet or max-snippet controls, which also affect regular snippets. The Google-Extended control does not affect inclusion in Google Search, including AI Overviews.

Does being cited in AI Overviews bring traffic?

Some, though click-through rates are generally lower than for a top organic result. Citations also build brand visibility, which tends to show up as more branded searches and direct visits.

Is optimizing for ChatGPT different from optimizing for Google?

The retrieval systems differ, but the content qualities that help are similar: clear answers, original information, consistent entity signals and accessibility to the relevant crawlers.
