Quick answer: Google Local Services Ads (LSAs) charge per lead and appear above everything else for eligible service searches, so they bring calls quickly but stop when you stop paying. Local SEO earns map pack and organic rankings that take months to build but keep producing leads without a cost per call. For most home service and professional service businesses, the best approach is LSAs for immediate demand and SEO for long-term cost control.

“Should I do Local Services Ads or SEO?” comes up in almost every conversation I have with plumbers, HVAC companies, locksmiths and law firms. It is the wrong question, because the two do different jobs. The useful question is how much of your budget should go to each, and how that should change over time.

What Local Services Ads are

Local Services Ads are a Google ad format for service businesses. They show at the top of results for searches like “garage door repair near me”, often with a “Google Screened” or “Google Guaranteed” badge depending on the category. Key differences from normal search ads:

  • You pay per lead, such as a call or message, not per click.
  • Google runs background and license checks before you can appear.
  • You can dispute leads that are not valid, such as wrong service or spam calls, within Google’s rules.
  • Availability depends on category and location. Not every trade or country is covered.

How Local Services Ads rank

Google says the order of LSA profiles depends on your bid and on how likely your ad is to produce a lead. That likelihood includes how responsive you are to customer inquiries (missed calls hurt), the location and time of the search, how relevant your business is to the request, and profile quality, including your rating, number of reviews, response time, photos and verification checks.

Notice the overlap with local SEO. Reviews, responsiveness and an accurate profile help both channels. Work done on one usually lifts the other.

When LSAs make the most sense

  • Emergency services where speed matters more than research, such as locksmiths, plumbers and water damage restoration.
  • New businesses that need calls while SEO is still building.
  • Seasonal spikes, such as the first heat wave for HVAC companies, when you can handle more jobs than organic search sends.
  • Businesses with excellent response times, because answering quickly improves LSA placement.

When SEO deserves more of the budget

  • High-value jobs with research before purchase, such as remodeling, solar or legal services, where people read cost guides and compare options.
  • Markets where LSA cost per lead keeps rising because of competition.
  • Businesses that want to own their visibility rather than rent it from an ad platform.
  • Services not eligible for LSAs in your category.

How I suggest splitting the budget

A pattern that works for many service businesses:

  1. Months 1 to 3: run LSAs for immediate calls while fixing the Business Profile, citations and core service pages.
  2. Months 4 to 9: keep LSAs for the highest-value services, and track which searches start sending organic and map pack leads.
  3. Month 10 onward: reduce LSA spend on searches where you rank strongly, and keep it where organic visibility is weak or the job value justifies paying per lead.

The key is tracking. Use separate phone numbers or call tracking so you know which channel each call came from. Without that, every budget decision is a guess.

Mistakes that waste LSA budget

  • Missing calls. It costs you the lead and lowers your future placement.
  • Not disputing invalid leads. Review each lead and dispute those that qualify.
  • Selecting job types you do not want. Turn off services that are unprofitable for you.
  • Ignoring reviews. Your LSA rating and review count affect placement, so a review system pays off twice. See how to get more Google reviews.

Frequently asked questions

Do Local Services Ads help organic rankings?

Not directly. They are a separate ad system. Indirectly, more customers can mean more reviews, which help both channels.

Are Local Services Ads worth it?

Often, for emergency and high-intent services, provided you answer calls quickly and dispute invalid leads. Compare your cost per booked job, not just cost per lead.

Can I run LSAs and Google Search Ads at the same time?

Yes. Many businesses run both, with LSAs capturing the top placement and search ads covering keywords LSAs do not.

Is the Google Guaranteed badge the same as Google Screened?

No. The badge shown depends on your business category. Both indicate that Google has completed checks on the business.
