Google Business Profile optimization that turns map views into phone calls.
Your Business Profile is the first thing most local customers see, often before your website. I set it up, fix it and keep it competitive: the right categories, complete services, real photos, a steady review flow and edits made in a way that does not trigger suspensions.
Four ways a Business Profile quietly loses you customers
Most profiles I review are verified and look fine at a glance. The problems sit in the fields owners rarely revisit, and in what competitors are doing that they are not.
The primary category is too broad
You chose "Contractor" or "Medical clinic" because it felt inclusive. Every business above you picked the specific category that matches the search, and Google treats the primary category as one of the strongest relevance signals on the profile.
RelevanceHalf the profile is empty
Services, products, attributes, opening dates, service areas and photos are left blank or out of date. Each empty field is a missed chance to match a search and a reason for a customer to keep scrolling.
CompletenessThe profile has gone quiet
The newest review is eight months old, the last photo shows a van you sold, and nobody replies to questions. Searchers read that as a business that may not answer the phone.
ActivityEdits keep getting rejected or the profile was suspended
A name change, an address move or a burst of edits triggered a review. Without knowing why, owners make more changes and make it worse.
RiskFor "near me" and service-plus-city searches, the map results appear before the website links. Many customers call, request directions or check reviews straight from the profile without ever visiting your site.
The local pack shows three businesses before a searcher has to tap "more places". Moving from fifth to third changes far more than the position number suggests.
Category, services and completeness changes can show effect within days or weeks, much faster than most website SEO. It is usually the highest-return place to start.

What Google Business Profile optimization includes
Every engagement starts with the same comparison: your profile against the businesses that currently win the searches you want. The work then follows the gaps, in order of impact.

How a profile optimization project runs
Audit and competitor gap
I review your profile, edit history, duplicates and the three businesses beating you for each priority search, and measure map rankings across your area.
A ranked gap listFix the high-impact fields
Categories, services, business information and website link are corrected first, in a controlled order that avoids triggering reviews.
A complete, accurate profileBuild proof and activity
Photos, review routine and replies are put in place with your team, and duplicate or conflicting listings are cleaned up.
A profile that looks aliveMonitor and report
Ongoing monitoring for edits, monthly reporting on calls and directions, and adjustments based on what the data shows.
Reporting tied to callsProfile optimization done properly versus the usual quick setup
Many GBP services are a one-time setup with keyword-heavy text and a promise of rankings. Here is what changes when the profile is treated as your main local asset.
| Aspect | Typical quick setup | Working with me |
|---|---|---|
| Categories | Picked once from a guess | Chosen from the categories winning your actual searches |
| Business name | Keywords and city added to rank | Your real name, which keeps the profile safe |
| Services | A few generic entries | A full list in customer language, matched to your website |
| Photos | Stock images or none | Real photos of your team, work and premises |
| Reviews | Left to chance, or gated | An ethical routine that asks every customer |
| Suspension risk | Ignored until it happens | Edits made in a safe order, with a plan if one occurs |
| Reporting | A single ranking screenshot | Calls, directions and map positions across your area |
What you get from a Google Business Profile project
An optimized profile that keeps working
The main outcome is a complete, accurate and active profile that matches what customers search for, with a system your team can keep running.
- Category recommendations based on the businesses winning your searches
- A fully completed profile: services, attributes, hours, photos and links
- A review request routine with direct link, QR code and reply templates
- Duplicate and conflicting listings identified and resolved
- Monthly report on calls, direction requests, website clicks and map positions
Competitor gap list
What the top three businesses have that you do not, field by field, so every change has a reason.
Map ranking grid
Positions measured at points across your service area, showing exactly where you appear and where you do not.
Suspension-safe change log
Every edit recorded with the date and reason, so if Google ever questions the profile you have a clear history.
Team guide
A one-page guide for staff on asking for reviews, taking useful photos and what never to change on the profile.
Three ways to work on your profile
Scope and price are agreed in writing after I have looked at your profile. No long lock-in.
One-time optimization
A focused project to fix categories, information, services, photos and duplicates, plus a review routine your team runs afterward. Best when the profile has never been done properly.
Ongoing management
Monthly monitoring, review replies, updates, photo additions and reporting. Best in competitive markets where the profile needs attention every month.
Suspension or problem fix
A defined piece of work to diagnose a suspension, rejected edits or a duplicate problem and get the profile back to a stable state.
Is Google Business Profile optimization right for you?
A strong fit when
- ✓Customers find you through Google Maps or "near me" searches
- ✓You have a verified profile but appear mainly for your own business name
- ✓Competitors with fewer reviews or a weaker website outrank you in the map
- ✓Your profile was suspended, or edits keep being rejected
- ✓You want calls and direction requests, not just rankings

A closer look at Google Business Profile optimization
Google describes local ranking in three words: relevance, distance and prominence. Distance is fixed by where your business is and where the searcher stands. Optimization works on the other two, and the Business Profile is where both start.
Why the category decision matters so much
The primary category tells Google what your business is. Pick one that is broader than what customers search for and you compete for everything weakly. Pick the most specific accurate category and you compete strongly for the searches that bring buyers. The fastest way to check is to look at the categories used by the three businesses that win your main searches. If they all use something more specific than you, that is usually your first fix.
Completeness is not cosmetic
Services, attributes, hours, photos and descriptions give Google more ways to match your profile to a search and give customers reasons to choose you. A complete profile also signals an active, well-run business. In my reviews, the gap between a top-ranking profile and an average one is usually dozens of small missing details rather than one big secret.
Reviews: volume, recency and replies
Google lists review count and score among the signals that affect local ranking, and searchers use recent reviews to decide who to call. A steady flow matters more than a one-off burst, and replies show that a real person runs the business. The rules are simple: ask every customer, never pay or reward for reviews and never filter out unhappy customers.
Keeping the profile safe
Suspensions usually follow changes that look suspicious: a new name with keywords, a move to a shared or virtual address, multiple profiles for one place or many edits at once. Making changes in a controlled order, keeping the website and main listings in agreement and documenting every change protects the profile you depend on.
Where the profile fits in the bigger picture
A strong profile is the fastest win in local SEO, but it works best supported by consistent listings, a website with real service and area pages and local mentions. If you want that whole system, my local SEO service covers it, and my guide to getting more Google reviews explains the review side in detail.
